Seven TimeSpaces, or rooms, are linked in a spiral
movement. In this movement past, present, and future circulate. In the spiral
of time the genesis, historical impact, and changes of a matriarchal pattern
become visible. In each of the TimeSpaces particular historical and symbolical
aspects of the pattern emerge. For each TimeSpace, and in each room, this
historical occurrence is illustrated through the leifmotif of a woman's
quotation, a specially designed pictogram, and a guiding image. |

|
The fourth TimeSpace, and room, recounts the
revolutionary potential of women in modern times.
The snake symbolizes the force of renewal and wisdom,
always entwined with the energy of desire and the quest for knowledge.
Especially in the revolutionary movements of this time the snake symbolism
found new, gender-democratic meaning.
With their
march on Versailles women set off the French Revolution. They personify
the modern claim to freedom, equality, and sisterly solidarity.
The
anonymous, illuminated etching from 1789 shows the march of the women on
Versailles and is in the Musée Carnavalet in Paris.
